Bitter is the New Black February 28, 2014 Bitter is the New Black is a story of how a woman change through the hardships in her life. This book is based on the true story of the writer of the novel who is the protagonist or hero in the story who from being a haughty former sorority girl, egocentric and shopaholic went from having a household income of almost a quarter-million dollars turns into a matured, sensitive and better woman. I really like the personality of Jen Lancaster and her smart-mouth when she can just easily say things to those person who insult her because of her being fat, overdressed and addicted to shopping and make her feel inferior. I guess she also believe in the saying which is also my favorite which goes like this “No one will make you feel inferior, unless you let them do” because honestly, when it comes to telling people frankly is a lot of struggle for me. Jen Lancaster’s personality reminds me of my favorite character in one of my favorite book “Friend Me” (one of my reading log) who is Nesta because they have the same characteristics when it comes to people who stoops them down and they both crazy about fashion trends and shoes that they will conquer even the hardest odd just to get them. I guess if things turn into the opposite way, if Jen was evicted from her work, she will never learn that those Prada bag, pricey shoes, expensive perfume and trending clothes will not give her the true happiness that only few people had ever experienced and will not make her famous like how she wants herself to be. She will not be able to discover her great talent in writing which make her famous now and I’m pretty sure that I will not be able to read her book now which is one of my favorites. I personally like Fletch, Jen’s boyfriend, who is really a patient man and the only person who could tolerate and understand Jen’s behavior especially in her worst day. I really love how Fletch proposed to Jen which is really cute and also love Jen’s dogs who are Loki and Maisy since I really love dogs. I really didn’t understand why Jen did not fight back when Kathleen backstabbed her and traited her in her work. She said bad things to Jen that’s why her employer rejected her but I guess that’s because Kathleen is just one of her few friends before. I admired Jen’s high self-confidence that she doesn’t even care when people told her she’s fat and she doesn’t deserve to be like this and like that. Maybe that’s what make me fall inlove with Jen because for me it is really a big deal when somebody told me I’m getting fat but for her, she just don’t care and I really love her  for that and all her craziness.

Friend Me by Cathy Hopkins January 2014 Cathy Hopkins story Friend Me is a story of three bestfriends named Lucy, Izzie and Nesta who go crazy about being teenager. A story of how friendship survived even in the greatest issues about fashion, family and boys. The best thing that could happen to you while reading a novel is when you can actually relate to one of the character in the story and especially when both of you shared the same likes, dislikes and ideal mate and that was exactly how I felt with Lucy. Lucy being in love with arts, pets and dresses are just some of those things that we really have in common. When I was also at her age, I also felt the same way just like her. Like having insecurities of how people came out to be very attractive, having a good family and especially those people who finally found their best friends. We both have this shy-and-no-confidence-at-all thing with boys. I really felt like no one will ever get attracted to me because I don’t have this nice nose, expressive eyes and pouty lips. But those things change, also with Lucy, when I met this guy in our school. Our first debut. I tried to be attractive and have confidence so that he will notice me in which I didn’t expect that it will also, at the same time, brings out the best of me. My friends used to tell me that I am lucky to have a great family who’s really complete and supportive and just like Lucy there was also time when I came to really hate them because they’re weird but things changed when I really felt their love towards me and I came to love them also. We also both love watching movies with our bestfriends. I used to that along with my bestfriends Jayson and Ronah during our free time. No two persons are the same with each other so just like Lucy and I, we also have some things which are not common to both of us just like she have a white skin, blond hair and blue eyes which I obviously don’t have. She also knew how to sew which I don’t have talent at all. All I know is to wear those dress and no more and no less. And those are the small things that Lucy and I have uncommon to each and anything else will make Lucy and I look like a two flowers in one seed. I really wish she was true or more like she really exists in this world so that the two of us can be bestfriend along with my friends here in reality. The last thing that I like about here is this line that she said in the story: “Don’t wait for your ship to come in. Swim out to it.”

About the friendship that survived even in their greatest issue about fashion, friends and boys. When I was still in highschool, I also experienced those insecurities just like those teenagers do. Like asking yourself how come those people came to be so attractive, why did they have so many friends and have a great family. But those things were being answered slowly as I go on with my life and started to think matured enough to understand those scarcities. So what I did is that I tried to be happy and positive in life so that people around me will also get happy and positive. I felt it was very brave for Nesta being so strong and positive even she was being discriminated in all her life because of her black skin but she was really beautiful for me inside and outside. But I really didn’t get it why Nesta lied about her being rich just to fit in with Simon who is rich and handsome. I mean she was also beautiful and Simon really love her even she was not that rich as he is. I also felt happy when Lucy finally came out to her shell and find her guy, Tony, who is very handsome, funny and kind but I felt sad when they broke up and I didn’t get it why Lucy have to do it when Tony is so perfect and lovely but my happiness came back when Lucy finally decided to take chance with Tony. I also think that if Tony and Lucy will realize they both love each other, they will be loving parents in the future. I got confused why Izzie have to be so crazy about this guy that she even cancelled all her plans with the girls and just keep herself looking at the phone all her time when she’s beautiful and she didn’t really have to do it with the guy who is just playing around with her. I think and I wish that these three girls will be bestfriends forever until they grow old and have their grandchildren. Only with the Heart by Sherri Szeman December 29, 2013 Dear Author, Good day! First of all, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to you for having a very touching novel which was crafted in its most perfect way and also with the very good idea and wild imagination in writing this novel. Trying to give and write a novel that talks mostly about a person with an Alzheimer’s disease could have been very difficult for you because you need to give a good and excellent detail but you’re writing skills never allow these things to interfere in having an excellent novel that you even give those details perfectly that really comes out in its most realistic way. Actually my friend Ronah recommended your book for me to read for the requirement for one of my subject this year. She wasn’t able to read so I really don’t have an idea what your novel is all about and moreover, it was first time to hear your name. But I’m really thankful Ronah recommended your book to me for I will surely missed one half of my life and regret it forever if I wasn’t able to read your novel. Only with the Heart is the profoundly affecting story of a family pushed to a point of destruction by the devastating effects of an Alzheimer’s disease. Claudia wanted to be a part of a family. Growing up in different foster homes, she never felt the essence of being in a family. When she got married with Sam, not only did she found a husband but also a father and mother which are Harold and Eleanor. Eleanor was the perfect mother for Claudia for she was as supportive and loving mother. But as time goes on, everything change when Eleanor was diagnosed having an Alzheimer’s disease and Claudia was suspected to be the killer. I really like Claudia in this novel because she really is the perfect daughter every mother and father wishes to have and I idolize Sam for being a real man for Claudia and his mother. Your novel Only with the Heart stirs emotion and makes us reader to think more logical for us to understand it. It doesn’t just touch our lives but also gives twist that we never imagine to happen. It makes me realize that a family should be together and should never leave each other even in its most drastic part of one’s life. This is the first time that I read a novel from you but I assure you that you catch my heart from the very first time that I read this story. I hope that this will not be the last time that I could read a novel from you and I’m looking forward to read more novel from you that will make me fall in love just like this novel of yours, Only with the Heart. I’m looking forward in writing more letters for you. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas and Bountiful New Year! Truly yours, Rutchell C. Saplot

Only with the Heart by Sherri Szeman December 29, 2013 I wonder why people blamed Claudia for the death of her husband’s mother Eleanor? I mean Claudia spent her whole life taking care of Eleanor and the only person who could do that is those who have a genuine love for someone. I also couldn’t figure out why Sam didn’t send Eleanor to a home center? When he thinks that Eleanor just ruined his marriage life because Claudia was too busy taking care of Eleanor that she can’t even give him attention. But as I go on reading the story, I idolized Claudia for having a genuine love for Eleanor that even though she was accused for killing her, she still love her and care for her as well as Sam who gave up his own business and career to support his mother’s medical bills and nurses but I really didn’t expect that Harold would be dead earlier in the story because Sam and Eleanor really need him in every trials of their life. But I really like the ending of the story where Sam and Claudia have their own baby at last. I think what happened to Claudia will help her to be a good mother and wife for their new life after the incident that will help them have a good family of their own. The story Only with the Heart by Sherri Szeman reminds me of the movie 50 First Dates where Alzheimer’s Disease also became the hindrance of both love story because in the movie, the girl lost her memory every day and just like in the story, Eleanor lost her memory and things became different and all people were affected by it but I guess both story have one lesson that they want to convey that True Love conquers all because not even a disease and trials could ruin one’s love for a person.

ABAKADA … Ina November 27, 2013 Every people have the right to be loved, to be respected and to acquire things they need, especially education. ABAKADA … Ina is a story of a woman, because of being uneducated person, experienced the bitterness of life. Estela played by Lorna Tolentino was once a dreamer back when she was still a young girl but because of lack of courage and money, she quit school and just helps in their farm. Until she became a mother of three children namely Gina, Beth and Joan and a wife of Daniel played by Albert Martinez and just forget dreaming and education because for her, money is what they need in order to survive. She worked hard in selling fruits and vegetables for her family for she thought that is all she need to do to be called a mother but things change so does her beliefs when her three daughters asked for her help in their studying. She can’t give what she doesn’t have. She can’t teach or help them in things she wasn’t sure about. She felt insecure for she doesn’t know how to read and write fluently. Realization and self-pitying came where all she could think is to get back in school and educate herself. She was being laughed by the people who hear about her plans and that doesn’t exclude her own family and being discriminated but she doesn’t want to be the little girl she was before again, fragile and easily got discouraged so she go to school with her youngest daughter with a goal of being the best mother of all. ABAKADA … Ina tells us that we should not take education for granted. Education doesn’t just give us diplomas and honors but it also gives us self-assurance and satisfaction in life that even money couldn’t give. You cannot give what you don’t have. You cannot give knowledge if you yourself need to know it. So we must be thankful for ourselves being in school and able to acquire knowledge and wisdom because there are too many people in this world who wants to be in our sit today. We must know ourselves and our goal in order to be successful in life because being in a field where you learn and also enjoy is such a great achievement just like Daniel did in the story. As what Carl Roger said and I quote, “The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change”. Estela in the play even though she is already a mother and too old to go to school is still eager to educate herself even though discrimination and bad things were said to her. She wants change and she knows she will achieve it by acquiring education. She wants to learn things she never did before and with God’s love and perseverance, she know she will learn to love herself soon.

Long Time Coming By Sandra Brown November 24, 2013 Marnie Hibbs – a woman with black hair, gray wide eyes filled with love and secrets and has sexy intriguing lips who take a lot of affirmation from every man she met including Law. She was the mother David known since he came out of the world as she took the responsibility of being his mother legally and emotionally. She earns money in being a freelance illustrator which she used in rearing David and giving him all he wants and supporting her mother’s medical bills in the rest home. Law describe her as a tiny package of a woman but when riled she was as hot as a dynamite and exciting. Law told her once she was a dried-up, uptight prude woman because of avoiding herself showing what she really feels about something or someone especially on Law. She’s afraid to break rules unlike her sister Sharon that make them called her “Miss-Goody-Two-Shoes” or “Squirt”. Many men admired her because of her beauty and good personality that even David’s friends had a crush on her because she looks younger than her age but she’s afraid of falling in love again because of her broken love from her first love, Law, who catch her eye the very first time he smiled on her. As a reader, I was inspired by her having a heart of being a mother in a very young age and how brave she was taking the responsibility of being a mother and a breadwinner of the family. David loves her so much that he even refers her as the best mother of all. But as Law came into her life again, her worst nightmare came when she had to give up David for his true father for she think she had no fight to Law’s wealth and him being his biological father. She thinks Law came into David’s life like a Santa Claus bearing gifts and giving him what he needs in a blink of an eye than her who needs to save money for a year just to afford buying new wallpaper into David’s room. She had no chance in winning the battle she secretly put between David and her. She felt insecure, rejected and left with nothing as David start to live with his father. She wants Law but she doesn’t want to feel the loneliness she felt before when he leave her for his dreams. She put aside every chance she can be happy with him. But as Law persistently tried to get her, she can’t do anything but to say yes. Lawrence Joshua Kincaid – tall, blue eyed man who attracts many women who laid eyes on him including Marnie, he had a blond hair and a muscular body that Marnie once describe it as the finest work of art she had ever seen. He was a NASA Astronaut who successfully completed his mission on space that makes him the latest national hero in their country. He had always been the topnotcher of the class, an adventurous person, very gentleman and think of himself as a man who had everything world has to offer. During his summer in Galveston, he met Sharon and Marnie who were younger than him, the summer which he didn’t know would change his life in the future. He had an affair with Sharon which results into an unwanted pregnancy but he was not aware of it for he was in the navy when everything was revealed and he didn’t even have an idea because when that night happen, Sharon lied to him that she used pills so she could not get pregnant. He was a happy-go-lucky in life until he received an anonymous letters claiming he had a son and threatened him with public scandal if he didn’t acknowledge it, letters that brought him to walk into Marnie’s life again and proved to himself that he was the father of the said child. He became a father in a blink of an eye but he was not afraid of it. Hence, it just proves him that he is really a man with dignity. But as he continues his role of being a father, he unconsciously hurt Marnie’s feelings and fell inlove with her but she was prudent as ever just like the way she was in their summer in Galveston and she taught him how to wait with someone he really loves but he was persistent with his love for Marnie. He tried to seduce her with all the tactics he used to other women but it didn’t work on her. He wanted Marnie so bad but she keep on refusing until one day came when he successfully change Marnie’s last name with him. David Joshua Kincaid – blond, blue eyed man just like his father and good looking. He’s a soccer player and he excels in everything he tries to do which he also inherited from his father. He idolized Law even before he knew he was his father. He’s smart and kind which Law referred him as the child all father could ever dream of. He respects Marnie so much and even loves her more than his biological mother. After knowing who his father was, he suddenly felt guilty leaving his mother just to be with his father. So he tried to set up his two parents so that they would be a family. For me, he’s a good model for our youth today. Humble, intelligent, handsome and close to God. He’s the tool fate used to cross Marnie and Law life again but he was also the reason why the two begin to fight with each other. But he was glad to hear that it’s not only his last name Law want to change but also with Marnie. Marnie’s mother – the woman behind those alleged letters. Her husband was a minister in their town before it died. She was sick, paralyzed and couldn’t even speak a word and when Marnie knew that her mother is the one who keep sending letters to Law, she confronted her. In there she said, she did it not for David’s sake but for her revenge to Law for having a charmed life when her whole family had been broken apart because of him. She thinks having David in Law’s life would be a burden for him but in the end of the story, she died lonely and embittered woman.

Lawrence Joshua Kincaid tall, blue eyed man who attracts many women who laid eyes on him including Marnie, he had a blond hair and a muscular body that Marnie once describe it as the finest work of art she had ever seen.

Long Time Coming By Sandra Brown Long Time Coming is a story that could make you realize that being a mother knows no age and make you believe that true love waits and some love are worth fighting for. As I was reading the book, I can’t help myself but to adore Marnie for being so brave and being responsible in taking care of her sister’s unwanted child who brings misery to their family, for having patience in waiting for the one she love even though there’s no assurance that this man would walk into her life again and love her as much as she did, and being a good friend and mother to David even if she don’t mothered him biologically. I guess that’s what really love is and the magic that it can do to you. You’ll be surprise that you can be someone you never think you can and be even more surprise to yourself that you have this capacity in being patient to someone you really love. But I wonder why Marnie was so kind to her sister that she even take the responsibility of being a mother to her sister’s child even though her sister didn’t love her as much she does? It also puzzled me why Marnie’s father and mother didn’t love David as much as Marnie does. Was it because no one fathered him or they think of David as bad luck in their family because Marnie’s father lost his job of being a minister in the community and Sharon got into an accident after her birth  of David. It confused me because as what the author describe David, he is a child that any family could ever dream of. If you came to read this story you will never wonder why Marnie love Law that much because as a reader of the book, I also fell in love with Law Kincaid because of his undeniable charm and his personality of being a positive in life and has proven himself in the story that he really is a man. It doesn’t even occur to his mind of running away when he knew that he was the father of David. Because of him, I learned that you must enjoy life has to offer, don’t avoid yourself to the happiness that life could give you and most of all be responsible in everything that you have done and everything you’re about to. I felt it was difficult for David living in not knowing who his father was but as what Marnie said to him that made me also inspired is that “You are an individual and where you’re going is more important than where you came from”. I think if Marnie’s mother was not paralyzed and sick she would do other scandalous things other than sending those alleged letters because she was so desperate in ruining Law’s life and if Marnie didn’t advised Sharon to continue her pregnancy she would have aborted David the time she knew that she was pregnant. I can say that because as what I read in the book, Sharon became so rebellious and unhappy having David in her life. It shocked me that there’s a woman just like her who could be so hardhearted in her own child. As I read the book, I also remember the book that I’ve read this semestral break entitled Mistletoe and Miracle by Marie Ferrarella, a story of a man whose heart became stone in loving other woman than his first love Laurel, just like Marnie who became prudent to other men who could have a potential in having a serious relationship with her. They both waited and loved their first love for a very long time and because of one child, fate make those person they love walk in their lives again.
